For decades big business have used best practice benchmarking and realized billions in saving and revenues. Small business can reap even greater rewards from best practices. So what are the benefits of best practices for small Business?

    Third-Party Advertising

Published by Chris | Filed under Small Business | March 25th, 2007

Most small business advertisers prefer to buy advertising through a 3rd party network like Google. Besides a limited marketing budget, advertisers with small business just don’t like to deal directly with a blog is because it take too much time. By using Google Adwords or another network (like Text-link-Ads), advertisers can easily browse for a ton of sites and blogs that promotes their Small Business culture, and with a few clicks, can begin advertising.

Too many times, an advertiser ends up spending more on traditional print or television advertising. For example, Congos spent $200.00 per month for a Business Intelligence link. Had they done some research, they would get it for a fraction of the price at “Make Money Online” with John Chow dot com.

So, what 3rd party advertising could small businesses use? Well, there is no one 3rd party advertising network that’s is best suited for all business type, advertisers will have to find the one which best suits their business budget and theme.

Use A Blog To Promote A Small Business

Published by Chris | Filed under Make Money Blogging, Small Business | March 22nd, 2007

I want to expand a bit John Chow post on “using a blog to promote an online store. The concept of using a blog to help promote a small business website is a good practice and it’s something every small business should consider if they want to drive traffic to their small business website.

Since Google started Adwords, they have reduced the number of small businesses with e-commerce website in the search engine results page. Google’s main reason for doing this is to get small businesses to use Adwords to increase their SERP. Have to hand it to Google this was a smart move on their part.

Seeing that Google prefers content over ecommerce, starting a blog a small business is a great way in adding a content element to their business. For example, 1234Pens.com, the sponsor of the Nintendo Wii contest on John Chow dot com added a blog to their site. Having the contest on one of the best known blog will surely increase the site results in the SERP.

Besides just adding a content element, a blog gives you the opportunity to interact with customers, listen to the views and their wants. I have no doubt that blogs will soon be one of the top mediums.

IP Rights Part#2 – How To protect Your Website

Published by Chris | Filed under Internet, Small Business | March 19th, 2007

In my first post about Intellectual Property rights “Protecting Your Business Website Elements I wrote about how businesses can protect their different website elements. You Will be surprise to know what elements should be protected before launching a website or blog. Elements is one thing, but what about the necessary precautionary measures every webmaster and website owner should be aware off in other to protect their website from abusive use.

    Protecting Your IP Rights

I can assure you that if you don’t develop strategies to protect your IP from an early stage, you may lose your legal rights in them. A great way to start is by registering your Trademarks and domain names that are user-friendly and reflects your trademark, business name or character of you business. Why would someone one to do that? If your domain name is also registered as a trademark, then it strengthens you power to enforce your rights against anyone who tries to use the same Trademark to market similar products and services.

Think about patenting your online business methods in countries where such protection is available. This will strengthen your Trademark on a global standpoint. Also consider to take an IP insurance policy that would cover your legal cost should you need to take action against infringers. Just make sure you post a notice on your website.

Let People Know Your Content Is Protected

Many people just assume that material on website and blogs can be freely used for whatever. In other to protect your content it’s a good idea to mark you trademarks with trademark symbol or the word “copyright or abbreviation “Copr with the name of the copy owner; and the published year. Another option it to use watermarks that embed copyright information into the digital content itself. For example – if you’re into the music business your music can be watermarked by using a few bits of some music samples to encode ownership information.

Let People Know How They Can Use Your Content

Make a Copyright Statement on every page of your website that spells out your business’ terms on use of the page content. Viewers would at have a clear of whether or not, and on what conditions, they’re allowed to create links to your site, download and print material from the site, and who to contact to get a copyright clearance.
